Judy A. Lenehan was born
in Rochester, NY and currently resides just outside Baltimore in
Churchville, MD. The major portion of her art training occurred
in England at the City and Guilds of London Art School. Prior to
London she had worked and studied in New York City at Hunter College,
the School of Visual Arts, the Art Students League and the Riverside
Museum.
Following her four years in England, Lenehan returned
Stateside to set up her studio in Utica, NY. During this time, she
worked as a commercial silkscreen printer in addition to sculpting.
A move back to Rochester introduced her to Rick Lenehan. They were
married and remained in Rochester for another two years, as Lenehan
continued sculpting portraits and private commissions.
In 1984 the couple relocated to Baltimore, where
Lenehan’s interest in art therapy led her to pursue a graduate
degree in social work. Coming alongside individuals struggling with
personal tragedies further enhanced her sensitivity to the effects
of life’s pain and suffering. These insights, combined with
her vital relationship with God, have added both depth and inspiration
to her sculpture.
While her own work was on display at the Artshowcase
Gallery, Ms. Lenehan became involved in exhibition production work
for several area museums, and in 1992, she accepted a full-time
position as the graphics production artist for the Walters Art Museum.
Increasing demands at the museum left less and less time for her
sculpting, so after several years she left this position to return
exclusively to her own studio work.
Since that time, Lenehan’s work has moved
in several different directions. Some of her work has been reproduced
and marketed in major retail stores throughout the country. Her
more personal work has been imagery from the Lord that she believes
has been a word in due season for herself and others.
She continues to work primarily in clay, casting
her pieces into more permanent materials such as resin and bronze.
From the very beginning, Lenehan has been inspired by the natural
forms she sees around her, especially those of the human figure.
She sees her work as an act of worship to Father, God....reflecting
His heart, expressing His joy and visually speaking His words of
hope and encouragement.Lenehan has completed
commissions for non-profit organizations, individuals, and private
industry. Her works are found in various private collections both
in the USA and in Europe.
