Form and color have always been
of primary interest to me. Capturing and interpreting the little
incidents that mark the passing of time in a painting or drawing
is exhilarating. I love color both the subtle tones found in shadows
and the rich areas of saturated colors in lighted objects.
My strengths and preferences are for representational
art, yet I am not a slave to realism. I like the challenge of portraiture
and figure studies but mostly I paint my surroundings, finding enjoyment
in interpreting form and color to create the illusion of space.
My aim is a gently nostalgic vision of the everyday.
Harford County and Maryland provide a wealth
of subject matter from rural landscapes, urban areas and water scenes
and I try to take full advantage of these opportunities. Oil, acrylic,
watercolor and pastel are my mediums of choice. I often work “en
plein air,” but I also use sketches and photographs, which
I have taken as references for portrait and some landscapes.
